Democratizing Evaluation: Legit?

I share this reflection result of the experience I had this semester in my course, which evaluated community partners with a note to students, with a weighting of 5% the note.

"We sadly called attention to the lack of commitment and awareness of students
. To show as little interest in [our foundation] and
our children, we not only encourage but also valued the opportunity to
be a real contribution to improving our society. "

This is the comment that got one of the community members, criticizing the lack of student engagement, which meant that the final work was not given a real contribution to the organization. The main criticisms were aimed at the few meetings held with community partner, not having understood the need I had the organization, not having a share in the various stages of the project, which led to the planning of volunteer students came not respond to what the organization needed.
Without going into details of what went wrong (if it was a lack of student interest in the organization's limited experience in working with students or in the planning of the course), the result is interesting. The work that the student group handed, scored on 4.0, since from the standpoint of the curricular aspects of the course, deserved to be approved. However, note that the community partner was put under 2.5, based on a subjective grade averaged a score obtained from a table of observations with a score (in order to reduce subjectivity). The interesting thing is that community members evaluated the process in the field, and satisfaction with the product developed "with" students.
this regard me two questions arise: Is it legitimate to evaluate the community partner with a note on the final weight of the industry? Could increase the weight of the note by the community partner from 5% to 15%?

Ay! is not easy to justify this blog ... Customer Orientation

What makes a website or blog generates a community concerned?
O, which is the same, what makes people read and comment on a blog?
In my opinion the most basic is that there is a group of people with access to technology, interested in a topic and willing to spend even a short time to acquire and share knowledge and opinions about him.
There are also thousands of tricks for a more friendly blog. Among those suggested in the website are those of Rebecca Blood, a gringa who even published a book on how to write better blogs.
But my interest is more practical, more basic. I think a blog can generate interest, be a tool for learning and encouraging discussions are created ... in this case about Service-Learning. (Who would have told me I was number one detractor of these things)
Specifically I need to convince my boss that my efforts to keep this blog make sense. And it is costing. A lot.

Dresses For Juniors For Valentines

is fashionable in the company to rethink the management talk about the needs and demands of customers. Considering that companies are essentially profiting from their products or services clearly must be kept "tasting" to their customers.
believe in service learning is a phenomenon quite unique on this point.
While it is important to remain attentive to the needs of our clients (and clients consider this program to students and community partners), occasional no "taste." For example, if a student has no interest in doing a service activity is deemed unnecessary and independent protest if it results in better learning and benefit to the community partner.
In a case like this, I think it's possible "not listening" to customers, under the belief that if teachers, community partners and other students support the initiative ... then we are on track.
Do you believe?

TIME How to Grow? What can incorporate service-learning courses? Service Learning versus

is clear that not all courses can incorporate Service Learning methodology. .
Now that we are considering looking for new courses for next semester we invite you to think about the minimum requirements that must be a way to incorporate this methodology.

Some examples of requirements (dicutibles obviously):

1. The service component must be evaluated with more than 30% of the final grade.
2. The course must include at least two instances of reflection on the service.
3. The teacher must attend at least one training instance.
4. The teacher should be able to evaluate each service products.
5. The course can not be freshmen

and so ... though it has not been necessary soon we establish certain minimum requirements.
and we'd love your suggestions. do it using the space: Comments below.

Broken Capillaries On Chest While Pregnant

Ideally, the methodology of service learning, both aspects are seen as equally important.
However, when choosing, in the extreme situation that a teacher had to prioritize the learning of their students or the quality of service, both of which were not possible to develop simultaneously
What should be emphasized?

For example,
Suppose that an institution will offer a particular product during the semester we realize that in reality will not serve what we offer, but if you serve other than students can do but not with the expected learning realaciona course.
One possibility is to continue the initial work, although this does not serve the institution, another is to modify the work with the risk of not learning.

What do you do there?

Summary Deathwatch By Robb White

The challenge of the participation

As many of you already know we are developing next year's planning. In A + S UC important part of the program's achievements to the credit for this instance was generated participatory.
Teachers, community partners and student representatives have participated Network in the generation of strategic guidelines and the implementation of activities that have enabled us to grow. However, participation means allowing others to make important decisions and this is not easy. Different actors
think differently, have different perspectives and reconciliation is not always possible.
what to do to include the different views in our plan for next year?
hope that the meetings this week with teachers and students give us insights on how to continue ... and we can build a program that represents us all. If anyone has a strategy, an activity or an opinion that contribution in the planning process is always welcome! .. and hope to integrate

Make informed decisions to grow better in the curriculum

UC Service Learning is growing and we must make many decisions to generate an appropriate strategy to spread the methodology allows the UC.
To make those decisions is important to foundations that provide a choice between options:
Do we prefer to have more courses to implement A + S or for those undertaking are of better quality?
to grow, is it more appropriate to better equip teachers to implement with less support or get more consultants to further support teachers?
These are some of the questions we try to respond. Some research
made in the United States samples of more than 400 universities on the institutionalization of service learning show results regarding the obstacles that exist to extend A & S Can we rely on what they have done to make better choices?
For example:
86% of institutions surveyed believe that lack of time for teachers is the most significant obstacle preventing spread the Learning Service. This factor is still a lack of funding for A + S experiences with 62% and then the lack of understanding of this methodology in the university with 58%.
However, choosing to base our actions on the data can lead us to ignore political and institutional conditions that limit our actions. Whereas
is our strategic planning process, we welcome all comments to help us make better decisions.

Service: Mandatory or voluntary? Learning Service

When designing a course, teachers have the choice of teaching methods at their discretion. If a teacher believes that students need to read a book to achieve a learning objective, then makes the required reading. If you think needs to be done in a laboratory exercise makes laboratory practices are mandatory to pass the course.
Then: If a teacher believes that to achieve the educational objectives proposed is necessary for students to perform a service experience ... Is it mandatory? Is it mandatory?

you contributing to society?

is common to find people enthusiastic in front of the Service Learning Methodology, which is highly valued and which universities open their doors to the community, from teaching. It would be strange to speak ill of an initiative with such good intentions, it would be frowned upon as a dicidente, it would be bad not to get deep this car that has so many fans!
I think therein lies the main threat to Service Learning: that there is a critical approach to methodology, the where persons or institutions that use it to improve its image, or actually believe they are making a contribution to society, and that their work ends up being detrimental to the communities.
us know what you think service-learning: for you, what is the greatest benefit? And more importantly, what is the biggest risk we should avoid? Sebastian Zulueta
